The problems faced by Black Americans are the canary in the coal mone, because they are problems faced by a large proportion of low-income Americans who have become increasingly marginalized since the early '70s -- Black Americans being merely the tip of the iceberg of a much, much larger problem that has little, if anything, to do with race. However, far too large a percentage of us have become dustracted by the canary, ignoring the fact that the entire mine is on fire.
