I finally got internet back. 9 days ago, Iowa was hit with what they call a derecho storm, which is a nice way to say a bad series of storms creating a mega storm. Imagine a storm that has wind-speeds that range between an ef-0 and ef-1 tornado, only it hit a path about 40 miles wide that went for 770 miles west to east. It knocked out half of the power to homes in the Des Moines area, and 90% of the power in Cedar Rapids. Through Iowa, it roughly followed Interstate 80, and kept going until Ohio.
Fortunately, there was no significant loss of life. Unfortunately, the damage was so widespread that the clean-up and re-establishment of utilities is going to take some time. We were lucky to get our power back in about 30 hours, but I have friends in Cedar Rapids that are still without power. Of course, my phone has had spotty service, as we lost some towers. They say the rural communities may take weeks to get things back up. Since most people are still working remotely, you can imagine ...
