“Using a Black leader's words to suggest that Black people aren't grieving appropriately and aren't fighting their oppressors appropriately is a kind of gaslighting that is really inappropriate for us as white people to engage in. I as a white person cannot begin to understand the pain of countless generations of Black people who have been systemically oppressed, denied basic human rights, killed at gut-turning rates, shot by armed police while sleeping in their beds, murdered on routine traffic stops or during entirely mundane interactions with the police or civilians, or actively hunted down by white supremacists. We cannot understand. We don't get to tell people how to fight this fight. And we definitely don't get to use Black words to try to control and gaslight Black pain.
