I was talking today with a friend of mine who is currently developing a film project for a major Hollywood studio. I promised her I wouldn't repeat what she said to anyone, but none of you know her, and I believe you all need to know this:
An exec at this studio who knew her and her boyfriend is the primary producer for this project. Recently she and her boyfriend broke up, and since he was friendly with both of them, he was among the first to hear this news.
Ever since then, this exec has gotten extremely inappropriate in his conversations and correspondence with her, going so far as to graphically describe his you-know-what, and what he would like her to do to it, and what he would like to do to her with it. It's disgusting.
To her credit, she is saving the emails. However, she's also refusing to allow friends of hers within the company to go to HR, and she's certainly not going herself. She's worried, as most women in her position are, about what he might do in retaliation if she tells. She is worried her career, which she has worked very hard for, will be ruined. Not to mention, during lockdown she hasn't needed to be in the same room with him. She worries what will happen once lockdown restrictions are lifted, and she Will need to be in the same room as him.
What I learned from her today is that, even in the post-hashtag-MeToo, post-Weinstein (Harvey, that is) world, nothing in Hollyweird has changed. It's the same as ever it was.
@DaveRubin, I'm sure you've reached out to Rose McGowan and others like her. I'm really hoping someone like Rose will sit down with you to talk about the reality of the out-of-control situation in Hollywood. The fact that the MeToo movement tried to destroy people who didn't deserve it doesn't change the fact that Harvey wasn't the only monster in Hollywood, and that the rest of the monsters are still there and nobody's doing anything about it.
I've told my friend what I think she should do: tell on this SOB, share the emails, don't let him get away with sexual harassment. She believes that would backfire on her, and she's worked too hard to let her career end like that. At the same time, she wants to quit. This isn't right. But I don't know what else to do to help her, except hope that you can help shine a spotlight on this situation. I really do hope Rose McGowan will talk to you.
(and no, I don't believe I've betrayed my friend's trust. By not using any names (no, my friend is not Rose McGowan), I've only described what might be happening to about a hundred different women in Hwood right now)
