My letter to the Lincoln County, Oregon department of public health regarding their mask policy which specifically exempts "people of color" from the requirement:

If you feel the need to mandate masks to prevent the spread of Covid, I will admit that there is a case to be made for that -- but I shall not argue for or against such a policy here. I am writing to say that exempting people from the requirement on account of their race not only erodes trust in public health authorities, but it is wrong. Period. It is never OK to treat someone differently based on race -- in fact, it is immoral on a fundamental level. If you feel that discrimination based on race is justified, you have company -- the authors of the Jim Crow laws felt exactly the same way.
