Benediction of the Waiting Warrior
I created this on my iPad about a year ago. I love the archetype of the warrior. I think my first exposure to it was when I read (listened to, actually ... audiobook read by the author) the book Iron John, by Robert Bly, back in the mid 90s. In short, it’s about why so many boys never grow up when the grow big.
In the past, often in more primitive cultures, when a boy was around the age of 13 or 15 or so, the older men in the community would steal the boy away, out into the wilderness. They would dance and chant around the fire, tell stories, write poetry, and lead the boy through various rites of passage. One of the more intriguing of these rites is that they would sometimes puncture the boy’s leg with some kind of object or knife. This was to allow the good spirits to enter the boy’s body, and therefore, psyche, and the boy understood that.
