Socialism doesn't work. No case can prove that better than the German one.
From WWII until re-unification in 1989/90 there were the free West (thanks to the US and its allies) and the soviet-controlled East.
No doubt the people in the eastern parts of our country were just as well educated, diligent, industrious as those in the West.
Yet

  • while the western (and admittedly far bigger) part built greatly upon its historic tradition of automobile invention and churned out one modern car after another, by globally revered makes like Mercedes, VW, BMW etc.,
  • the eastern part with its command economy barely managed to build cars at all, mainly the infamous "Trabant". (Later they had a second! model, the "Wartburg", bigger and somewhat more sophisticated.) Not only was the Trabant a ridiculous car, dozens of years behind in every aspect, the rulers did not even manage to build enough of them for their people.
