Happy Ground Hog Day! Blessed Feast of the Presentation of the Lord (40 days after Christmas) and happy mid-point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox! That is almost too much for a Tuesday to carry. Greetings Beloved Early Birds & Later Dayers, Conversants who open the window of their daily lives and Lurkers waiting to join these little tête-à-tête. Welcome Friends & Refugees all!
I am so thankful to be assigned to the country, while I loved my last assignment it was difficult to be part of a community struggling to keep a school open when there simply weren't enough children. Closing that school was one of the more difficult things I have done, much more difficult than a funeral. I left Epiphany of Our Lord not feeling very content about how it all played out in my time there. While I know I was not personally responsible for the school's closing, one gets haunted by "could have done more, or could have done differently" thoughts & reflections. I am the pastor who closed the school. That will be my sentence in some future parish guide.
Immaculate Heart of Mary, New Melle, outer St. Charles County and it's countryside brought more healing and peace than I anticipated. I had forgotten the healing and peaceful power in nature. Long country rides in silence, first alone and then with Jackson, gravel roads a plenty, immersed in rural life, nature worked her grace almost as powerfully as her Creator. A nature poem seems fitting.
To Portland Cement from Robert Frost
Whose woods these are
I think I know
They belong to the kingfisher, wren, and crow
They belong to the deer and the red-tailed hawk
That I see daily on my walk.
They belong to the great horned owl
And great blue heron,
Red fox, black mink,
And all their kin.
Don’t turn them to condominium.
My big black Lab will think it queer
If there’s a subdivision here.
What will become of all things wild
When there is black macadam piled,
When the stream is dry and the reed-lined pond
That the wild geese stop and settle on,
When the dead tree’s gone, with its hollow nest
Where the pileated woodpecker used to rest
With its ivory bill and its flaming crest?
